Discussing Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows

Reading the Deathly Hallows during the summer, we won't have a real time opportunity to discuss it prior to the start of school. So, let's make use of this online forum. Please do sign your name, as I'm intending this blog to be for the staff of our Berkeley school libraries, but to make it easy to post to I'm taking off the need to register to post.

I haven't read it yet, have to wait for my son to finish it, which hopefully will be soon! (He also got a full time job for the summer, so that has slowed down his progress...)

Dare I say, I was not planning on reading it. I read the first 4. I feel like I get the idea. There is no need for me to booktalk the 7th book in a very well-publicized series. And Harpeth, my 7 year-old, is keeping me posted as he plows through it. I must admit to reading the final sentence. But I won't spoil anything for you.

Wow! What more can I say? I felt completely satisfied with the conclusion of the Harry Potter series as I cheered and cried through the last one hundred pages. I just loved it!

I'd like to hear what the rest of you have to say as far as the age appropriateness of the book. I still have a lot of mixed feelings. Having all of the previous HP books in the library, I feel like I should have a copy of book seven just to make the collection complete, although, in my opinion, it certainly has moved beyond being a "just a kids book." In fact, I had to re-read a good part of it because there was so much I was confused about. Not to mention that I had to pull out the dictionary a few times to look up some words!

Even though it may be most appropriate for teens, I still think that older elementary students will be interested in reading it, if they haven't already. They may not understand all of the words, metaphors and themes, but that is the case with a lot of other books in the library as well.

Except for Mrs. Weasley's angry words to Bellatrix Lestrange toward the end of the book (which I personally thought was awesome!! haha), I can't think of enough good reasons to not carry it in an elementary library. I'd love to hear what others have to say.
